He's just a bloke who speaks to other blokes

If Danny Dyer were to compile a list of his favourite dubstep it'd probably contain a lot of tracks as moronic as these, I've totally neglected the horrid rave side of things so here's some clownstep that I can't help but like (mostly)

Danny Dyer's Dubstep Odyssey

1. Skism - Rise of the idiots
2. Chasing Shadows - Dr Sin
3. Orien - Dead Gangster
4. Skism - Back Off
5. Giant - Drumstick
6. Subscape - Wrong Number

8. Rob Sparx - Trooper (Bar 9 remix)

17. Grand Puba - Get It (Reso remix)
18. Mystic Man & Eshamanjaro - Minds I (Reso remix)
19. Tom Encore - Jig

To make amends for inflicting the aural equivalent of Aids on you here is some kinda post-disco space bass wonkyness. Myself, the Kaiser and the Tom the Govanor managed to truly destroy music last friday with the invention of Guffstep (containing real armpit guffs) coming to the conclusion that electronic music is just a bunch of bleeps and squeaks, and deciding that the Belleville three first got together on Wigan Pier, oh and the Danny Dyer realisation as well. I feel the need to apologise to Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May and Juan Atkins for comparing a true art form to the sounds made by a car alarm, Im now ready to join Danny and the other philistines of the world - I hang my head in shame - enjoy!

Its All Just Bleeps & Squeaks (Taken Out of Context)

1. Architeq - Twilight
2. Kelpe - The Blankout Agreement
3. Architeq - Birds Of Prey
4. Architeq - Into the Cosmos
5. Kelpe - Shipwreck Glue (Architeq remix)
6. Architeq - Packard

10. Kelpe - Pinch & Flare
11. Fedaden - Verdad (Kelpe remix)
12. Kelpe - Microscope Contents
13. Kelpe - Dig Up Stupid
14. Slugabed - Lets Go Swimming
15. Bibio - Sugarette

Me want cookie

Well hello dangerwankers. it's been a while. do excuse the deficit of posts from yours truly, i've been rather busy producing, working and building a recording studio! respect of the massive variety goes to rory power for keeping this blog fresh with some sick posts.

anyhow, as i'm now back on the blogging, i thought id kick things off with a lovely bit of filth.

enter cookie monsta. probably one of the most well known club friendly dubstep artists i can think of that hasn't been signed yet. he's had love from all the bigs boys in the scene and is quickly becoming a name synonymous with the dirty steppy club skanking sound of 2009. he's also just sent me over a mix that's chocka with 100% fresh new productions from himself. enjoy.

I Feel Space

Oi oi, new mix what I did for the I Feel Space boys seeing as im playing for them, and its an excuse to make a nice mix of Nu-Disco, House and Acid. Massively loving the old school revival works of Matt 'Radioslave' Edwards under his Cabin Fever Trax guise. Mmmmmm butter...

Slinky new mix from myself here. Melodic Detroit and Dub Techno make way for rolling carnival drums and R'n'B tinged Funky stylez, before caving under UKG bass pressure. Definitely one for the gyal dem, late night floors not early doors.

Guns don't kill people Lazers do

Major Lazer is the dancehall collaboration between Diplo & Switch, and between them those two have some pretty impressive credentials. Diplo and his Mad Decent brand has become the final word in trendy nu world music putting out music from luminaries such as Buraka Som Sistema, DJ Sega, Bonde Do Role, Blaqstarr, South Rakkas Crew… In addition he has produced albums for Santogold and M.I.A, while Switch basically invented the whole Fidget house thing years before it grew into the dirge of boring edits it has now become, also putting his considerable production skills to Santogold's massive 'Creator'. So you might imagine a project involving probably the 2 most creative minds operating in this sphere would be a massive success, and you would be correct, Here's the first single to be lifted from the album featuring Santogold and Mr Lexx on vocal duties. I can't think of any other song that samples the sound of a Nokia vibrating - Big!

Glade 2009

Well Glade was pretty awesome, it would seem that the whole of Matterly Bowl is covered in Audio Discharge stickers, including Mr Drums of Death (above) who was probably the highlight of the festival for me, with other notable performances coming from Drop The Lime, Squire of Gothos, Heatwave, Monkey Steak and too many others to name. Anyway here's a bit of disco from man like Drums of Death

Blame Canada

Dubstep's reach seems to be wrapping further and further around the globe. I'm not even sure you can call half of it dubstep anymore. As with every major genre to come along, sub-genres will always pop up and seem to be influenced by certain demographics and the particular producers in those areas; 'The Croydon sound', 'the Leeds sound', 'The Bristol sound.' Descriptive terms get bounded about as a part of it as well, Dub Techno, Clownstep, Purple, Clubstep, Aquacrunk, Gorestep, are just a handful of names for describing what has become an extremely diverse genre.

There seems to have been an surge in darker dubstep producers coming from Canada and North America in 2009, whose sound I can only describe as Transformers-esque. Midrange crunch, outfitted with plenty of phasing,1/8 step tremolos and mechanical samples that's clearly been influenced by a lot of UK producers. Vowel filters also seem to be prevalent amongst these producers, giving a filthy 'talking bassline' feeling. Whilst it's certainly not that original or reserved exclusively for that part of the world, these guys are perfecting this particular scene. Check out a few examples of the sound below!

Boom - Excision & Datsik

Talk Dubby To Me - Downlink

Gamma Ray Burst - Downlink

Crack - DZ ft. Cozee

Is it a bird......

....Well yes, Ikonika is a lady and resides on Kode9's Hyperdub imprint, but lets not think Steve has gotten all pervy on us, Ikonika’s beats are fresher then fresh with her brand of woozy synth step drawing obvious comparisons with label mates Darkstar, LV and Zomby.

Zomby

While Aquacrunk (or whatever its trendy to call the modern crop of post-Dilla beat inflections this week) may seem to be becoming a game of un-quantized beat willy jousting (i.e my drum programming is more out of time than yours) Zomby is keeping it real and unlike a lot of the scene hasn't quite vanished up his own arse yet as some have. Zomby appeared a couple of years back and has since released a flutter of 12"s for Ramp and Hyperdub, all lazer gun synths, off kilter beats and sub bass rumble, Kaliko off his recent double 12" for Hyperdub is a favourite; upward cascades of synth over enough polyrhythms for a whole Flying Lotus album - pure fire!

Zomby - Kaliko

Zomby has also been heavily influenced by the spirit and sound of hardcore early 90's rave, his first LP - 'Where Were U In 92' is so authentic (although what do I know - in 92 I was 6 years old!) with tough break beats, piano rave, euphoric vocal cuts and rave sirens set against Zomby's trademark phosphorescent backdrop it sounds like an unearthed gem from a shoebox of tapes recorded from pirate radio. Here's one from the album, owing more than a little to Bizarre Incs - Playing With Knives

Zomby - Float

Kuduro

Also on the ghetto pop tip are Portuguese collective Buraka Som Sistema, taking massive cues from Angolan Kuduro, but with more European influences of Techno, Dubstep and 4x4. I remember seeing them in 2007 with crowds of about 20 people really getting into it, at the time it was fresh new and exciting, and for me its lost a little of its sparkle, but I guess that’s no surprise 2 years down the line. Anyway they’re still putting out some serious heat, here’s a couple of recent efforts; a fairly chirpy remix of Swedish vocalist Lykke Li and a remix of Dre Skull and dancehall legend Sizzla

Lykke Li – Dance Dance Dance (Buraka Som Sistema remix)

Dre Skull feat Sizzla - Gone 2 Far (Buraka Som Sistema remix)

Abbafrica!

Radioclit are Johan Karlberg and Etienne Tron and are responsible for producing some pretty unclassifiable stuff, the best way of describing what they do is 'Ghetto-pop' or as the Bio puts it - 'One ear in the hood, another checking out Abba' there's a strong african influence present in what they do, having recently put out an album in collaboration with Esau Mwamwaya - an african singer from Malawi, including a massive collaboration with M.I.A and Santogold (look out for this on a mix soonish). Anyway here's a remix of Alphabeat sounding like a combination of afrobeat and scandinavian pop.

On the Wronk?

The whole Aquacrunk thing is really polarising the views of music journalists particularly those of early rave evangelist and Guardian writer Simon Reynolds who definitely seems to fall into the anti camp right now, lazily fencing artists such as Zomby, Rustie and HudMo into the 'Wonky' enclosure, an obvious reference to an ill conceived theory that to enjoy it one must first put their 'Wronk' hat on, read the article here This is especially damning on Mr Reynolds as this is a scene which he has no experience of whatsoever, and for someone so hugely influential to come out with this bollocks is damaging to a scene which is one of the more interesting things coming out of the UK right now.
Zomby was none too pleased and came back with a fairly swift riposte:

No one does Ketamine right ? ..i thought it died in the late 80’s after that shitty Madonna tour ended, maybe you know more…..
though i have seen a crusty white dude with dreadlocks rolling around in his own puke ‘going off on K’ in Brixton not long back ..dunno how inspirational a event for a artist that is however.
None of us make ‘wonky’…the notion is similar in descriptive terms to calling Heavy Metal ‘Loud’ or Jungle ‘Fast’ ,adjectives cannot function as noun’s..
its fairly unimaginative and ignorant by this point, at first the term was used loosely as it was a playful in-joke for producers working in disharmonic structure or notation, to make the link to Ketamine is wild.
Next time you write a piece in a national newspaper try have some accuracy or even some intellectual property on the creativity or artisty of the music/artists rather than lowest common denominator music journalism i.e ‘Drugs & a new music’.
Read it through Shutter shades on Hoffman 225’s, its more believable that way.
There was a Paragraph that work’s.
“Listen to Zomby tunes like Spaceman and Aquafresh (off his recent 7-track EP for Hyperdub) and it’s like someone’s taken the monochrome diagram that is dubstep’s rhythmic grid and scrawled woozily all over it with fluorescent marker pens.”

I've been meaning to write about Sublime Frequencies for a while, they're a Seattle based label dedicated to putting out raw as fuck world music, not in a kind of trendy mad decent way but rather putting out music largely recorded from old radio shows in the host countries. This has seen Nepalese folk, Thai pop, Algerian rai and Argentinian psychedelia amongst other things. I had missed the chandce to see Group Doueh and Omar Souleyman (pictured above) recently and im massively regretting it! Anyway check out the article in fact magazine for a more eloquent description and a mix containing some of the highlights from the back catalogue

Purple Hedgehog

Check these Gemmy remixes Sonic the Hedgehog:

Gemmy x Sonic

I would've creamed myself if he had done one of Chemical plant zone. Continuing the synth theme, I've just finished a new mix - the first half is the UK's view on forward thinking bass music - the purple wow sound. (even though im not sure its that forward thinking any more) The second half is the America's take on the same, with Starkey coming outta Philly and Kid606, Cardopusher and Pacheko coming outta Venezuela - definitely a darker sound.

Be More Burlesque!

Totally hyped about this - Im DJing next week @ Start the Bus (Bristol) Thurs 25th June - bring the BMore hard and unruly, alongside Burlesque beauties! (Seriously though what could be more fun than this) I may have to crack the nipple tassles out for this one. For those of you that aint got a clue BMore is the native music of Baltimore Maryland - hence the name, here's a BMore remix of a rave classic complete with the 'sing sing' and 'think' breaks that are ubiquitous in BMore club. Anyway the night is called Be More Burlesque (see what they did there!) Anyone in Bristol get down there! Also anyone in Bristol this weekend hit me up as I have 10 guestlist to give away as Im playing alongside Vast & Bulbous, Steve Rice Kelly Twins, Tekton & Wascal & Sell by Dave plus loads more.

What Dya Call it.... Funky..

UK Funky isn't really a new thing - it’s a dreadful name though granted, its better to think of Funky not as a new genre but more a way of repackaging something for a different scene as Bok Bok puts it "Funky is Grime in disguise" I tend to agree, while Funky isn't really anything new it's brought just enough grit and sub bass to the rather stale Funky house table to make the grime kids get into it. Grime after all is dying a death partially borne of its own success (Wiley/Dizzee/Tinchy) and partially its lack of evolution and association with gun crime, a lot of Grime DJs have been converted to Funky. (Lil Silva, Mak10 etc) as well as a lot of Dubstep DJs now dabbling in it (Kode9, Geiom, Ramadanman)

Cooly G - Dis Boy Pt4

Roska - Climate Change

NB Funky - Riddim Box

Breakstep... well sort of...

Breakstep came out of the whole UKG thing when producers like Darqwan, Zed Bias and Zinc cast away the sext shuffle of 2-step for a more beefy breakbeat sound while keeping the essence of UKG intact. Since then its has undergone a few interpretations, what would generally be considered breakstep today, is the kinda stuff put out by Marlow, Warlock, Blackmass Plastics etc, Im not really into this sound but im loving the techstep inspired works of Reso and the broken beat 2 step of TRG, while this doesn't really bear any resemblance to new Breakstep it definitely has made a fairly significant sacrific at the altar of Oris Jay et al.

Baseball bat... to the face.

I've had this one for a few weeks now, and I've been sat there desperately trying to figure out what it's supposed to be achieving...it just makes my face feel like the guy in the picture.

Am I missing something? Or is it actually just one of the worst songs released in years? I think it's the latter. All Hervé has managed to achieve with this one is offend my ears, and confirm to me that fidget is dead once and for all, leaving him with no option other than to explore alternative (shit) genres. Sluggish electro-metal + shocking performances from pig faced ex-Bonde Do Role singers headbanging will NEVER EVER sound good Mr. Harvey. And then just because the drums sound a little bit like High Rankin, getting him to do an average remix for it doesn't give it any more credibility. Shape up and release some music we can listen to. Just because you own your own label, doesn't give you the right to release utter crap. (Actually, I suppose it does.)

Rant over. I don't quite know why i got so worked up about that haha, just listen for yourself.

Let Them Eat Ket!

Bonjour!

By popular demand, i've finally gotten around to making an (almost) pure dubstep mix, filled with midranged crunchy-ness, transformers noises, evil basslines, and ridiculous samples. I'm personally leaning away from this style of dubstep of late, but, you've told me what you wanted, (apparently you want your ears to bleed) and it's been delivered!

Thank you Marie Antoinette for the inspiration for the title.

Emerald Moon

I've been a little off form with the blogging recently, whilst Power has been posting like a madman! (Some bloody good stuff he's put up though, I'm sure you'll agree).

However, I do have a valid excuse, in the form of my first track to be released from the digital captivity of my hard drive, and into the wild world of the interwebs. Download, and let me know what you think!

Moderat

Modeselektor have been around for what seems like donkey's years now, in that time they released the seminal Hello Mom & Happy Birthday albums. Now they've teamed up again with Bpitch control label mates Apparat for their first Moderat outing since 2002. I just got hold of this album and well its massive - with all the usual digi-dancehall related stuff, plus the epic Rusty Nails sounding like Thom Yorke meets Burial meets progressive trance a la Markus Schulz - big! Pick it up here and make sure to cop the album over at Juno if you like it.

Steamdub

After Ricorb showed me this little preview video on youtube of his upcoming Steamdub release the other night, I haven't stopped watching it! Sooooo dark, brutal and trippy, with layers and layers of sounds to keep you interested till the end. For me though, the video makes it! I recommend you crazy kids watch this one whilst your off your face at 6 in the morning...

If you haven't heard Ricorb before...he'll hurt your face with his industrial bass... I really reccomend that you hit him up on his myspace and particularly check out his AC Slater remix!

We can all groove with it.

Very excited about this one! This absolute belter was posted by L-Vis 1990 himself on Curbcrawlers last week. Particularly like the drop at 1.59...just lovely. Great video too!

Out soon on Mad Decent!

Ribbit

Well. I'm in love. I've known about these guys for a while but never given them a proper listen. Now I can safely say they're one of my favourite producers of 2009!

I'm talking about the fantastically named, Frogs in Socks. For me, they take deep and percussive techno and tech house to a whole new level. Their bootlegs are off the chain, the choice of samples is fantastic, the production is top grade... i've never enjoyed or bopped to tech so much! It's music for the club, that doesn't discriminate, that's thoughtful and interesting and hardly ever repeats or grates on itself. It all ends up becoming a wonderful symphony of both aggressive grit and subtle warmth in the low end and glitchy samples and quirky sounds in the high end, all rolled up inside a rolling wave of cultural percussion and varied influences.

If it hasn't become clear already, I can't suck up to these boys enough. And it's not just me saying it! Frogs in Socks recently won the iDJ Mix Competition and Chew the Fat! DJ Competition with one of the best mixes I've heard in a LONG time. They've also been raped regularly by Radio 1 DJ's, played at this year's Snowbombing Festival and are a firm favourite of one of my other top producers, Solo.

Without further adieu, and before I do actually start to wet myself, here's a taster of Frogs in Socks:

Slumfrog Millionaires (iDJ & Chew the Fat! Winning Mix) - Frogs in Socks

We are The People (Frogs in Socks Remix) - Empire of The Sun

Tasty bass

Been doing the rounds, and found this lovely little garage/bassline track from Nottingham producer Nay Nay, off of his new "Classic 4 Track EP" release:

Twinkle (feat. Spyda) - Nay Nay

I highly recommend the whole release, got some good collaborations with T2 (of 'Heartbroken' fame), Spyda, Tombstone and Flex which are all reminiscent of that clubby bassline sound that was big a few years ago, but with a more interesting twist, and some unique sounds.

The whole release is available from Juno, be sure to check it out!

Also, as a bonus, here's one of Derelict's tracks off his Streetfighter EP. Proper midrange, crunchy, filthy dubstep that doesnt over do it! Again, be sure to get the whole release from Juno!

Jesus Fuck - Derelict

You aint a Joker you're a Clown...

Was a mate of mine's retort to the young Joker when he was acting like a bit of a tit outside some nightclub in Bristol sometime… the details escape me. You can forgive the lad though, such a mercurial talent and barely out of Nappies. He's part of the Bristol purple wow crew that’s putting out so much lovely synth lead dubstep at the moment, anyone wanting to catch him can do so May 30th @ Lakota - for Rewind - the Neil Kymatik tribute. Here's an unreleased track that’s been doing the rounds
